This role requires an individual who can fulfil the function of an Investment Research Analyst with their eyes closed – you can smell a good investment almost automatically or you will apply your mind and innate curiosity about investments, to dig deep into it; picking it apart, clarifying how it works and if it does what it purports to do. This requires the foundational qualifications in Finance coupled with CFA, but much more is your intellect and passion for investments – lets call it X-Factor
While the role focusses on qualitative fund manager research, research across investment markets, and the management of fund of funds based portfolios, our client is a major player in the Multi-Management space that occupies a unique and respected position within the investment management industry in South Africa and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience researching both local and offshore asset classes, while interacting with and critiquing asset managers from across the world. The company currently manages and advises on R30bn of investor portfolios including both local and global assets.
The successful candidate will be positioned to develop a broad range of fund research and investment management skills through interactions with the industry’s most astute investment professionals.
The job description includes:
1. Fund Research:
a. Contribute to the fund research capability covering local and offshore fund managers.
b. Qualitative evaluation of fund management capabilities.
c. Quantitative assessments and analysis of fund management processes.
d. Meeting with and questioning local and offshore fund managers and their investment capabilities.
e. Maintaining relationships with asset managers locally and offshore.
f. Writing of reports, evaluations and comments for clients and business requirements.
g. Fund research projects.
h. Development of unique fund manager insights.
2. Investment Markets Research:
a. Research across local and offshore asset classes.
b. Assisting with the development of investment views across asset classes.
c. Research Projects spanning various investment topics.
d. Development and management of investment reporting on asset class research.
The above-mentioned is a structured version of what the job entails – BUT, it is bigger than this. We are looking for the X-Factor – to qualify for this role you will need to demonstrate a deep understanding of the world of investments, beyond the confinement of fund performance analysis. This role requires an authentic deep-dive knowledge and understanding of how the world of investments operate along with all the moving parts.
